6 Week Set Design Short Course
Between October and December of 2024 I completed a 10 week part-time course in set Design at UAL, St Martins. The course involved taking the provided screenplay and developing a scale model set mock up.
The Project
We read the play Monster by Duncan Macmillan and were instructed to generate a set design for the show during the ten week course
My Approach
I started with a mood board, displaying general thoughts of the play, costumes, colors, set, and the mood.
Bumps in the road
Originally I wanted to go with a naturalistic set, then one given the dimensions for the theatre I was advised not to as it was a small space. Attempting a naturalistic set may look overwhelming or not fit well in the space.
Final Product
I ended up going with a minimalist set, using lighting and sound to bring life into the play. Using a green/grey color for the background and main set, with contrasting warm and cool lights to display the mood of the scene.
Lessons Learned/Things to do Differently
I learned a lot about the process of designing a set, the many different stages, such as mood boards, scene breakdowns, Technical Drawings, the white card models, and final models.
